For ancilliary lords who will be involved in front line combat I will often go red and specialize their army to the bonus type. Going all blue there has obvious benefits, and allows me to skip those skills for the LL's who are doing most of the heavy fighting.

Usually I have a general whose sole purpose is recruiting and ferrying troops to the front line. Some lords have decent red skills that bonus a wide range of unit types, but it really depends on faction.įor other lords, I tend to focus on the role. I feel that having the right unit type is often better than having a bonus to the wrong unit type with them. This affects Empire the most, since your strategy with Empire is typically to compose your army to target the gaps in your opponent. I often avoid red for LL's because red skills bonus a particular unit type, which reduces your flexibility of composition. Also, LL typically have higher stats, so they are often useful for headshotting the enemy general, so going yellow with LL's is something I usually do anyway. Legendary Lords will usually have unique skills that are too good to pass up, regardless of the yellow vs red vs blue preference. The skills training buff for captains, however, is something I don't find all that useful.

However, the warrior priests have a major buff to army replenishment in the blue skills, which I always go for when the plan is to attach them. For example, blue skills for heroes tend to be campaign oriented, so conventional wisdom is put more points in yellow for heroes attached to armies. I would not get hung up on colors and pay more attention to specifically what the skills do.
